Feeling like the room is spinning can make everyday life difficult. Simple activities like walking, driving, bending down, or even turning your head may suddenly feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Many people who deal with vertigo often look for natural ways to find relief without relying only on medication.
One question people commonly ask is: can a chiropractor help with vertigo?
In many cases, the answer is yes.
Chiropractic care may help reduce vertigo symptoms by improving spinal alignment, relieving pressure in the neck, and supporting better communication between the brain, spine, and balance system. Depending on the cause of the vertigo, chiropractic treatment may help improve balance, reduce dizziness, and support long term wellness.
Vertigo is more than regular dizziness. It creates the feeling that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning even when you are standing still.
Some people describe vertigo as:
Vertigo symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people only experience mild dizziness while others struggle with balance and coordination.
Common symptoms include:
If symptoms are severe or sudden, it is important to seek medical attention right away.
The inner ear plays a major role in helping your body maintain balance and movement. When something affects this part of the body, it can confuse the brain and lead to vertigo symptoms. Inner ear related vertigo is one of the most common forms of dizziness people experience. Symptoms may become worse when changing positions, turning the head, or standing up quickly.
Common inner ear related causes include:
These conditions can affect how the brain receives balance signals from the inner ear. In many cases, people may also experience nausea, ringing in the ears, or difficulty walking steadily.
Problems in the cervical spine, which is the neck area of the spine, can also contribute to dizziness and balance issues. This type of dizziness is often called cervicogenic dizziness. When the muscles, joints, or nerves in the neck are not functioning properly, it may interfere with communication between the brain and body.
Poor posture, muscle tension, whiplash injuries, and spinal misalignment may all place stress on the neck. Many people who experience neck related vertigo also deal with stiffness, headaches, or limited neck movement. Chiropractic care may help improve spinal mobility and reduce tension that could be contributing to dizziness symptoms.
Concussions, falls, sports injuries, and car accidents can all affect the body’s balance system. Even a mild head injury may disrupt the inner ear, brain, or cervical spine and lead to vertigo symptoms. Some people notice dizziness immediately after an injury, while others may develop symptoms days or weeks later.
Head injuries can also create inflammation, muscle tension, or nerve irritation that affects balance and coordination. In cases involving whiplash, neck strain often plays a role in ongoing dizziness. It is important to properly evaluate symptoms after any head or neck injury to determine the best course of treatment.
Stress and anxiety can have a strong effect on the body, including the balance system. High stress levels may increase muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, which can contribute to dizziness and feelings of imbalance. Some people also experience faster breathing, increased heart rate, or light-headedness during periods of anxiety.
Ongoing stress may make vertigo symptoms feel more frequent or more intense. In many cases, people become trapped in a cycle where dizziness increases stress, and stress then worsens the dizziness. Relaxation techniques, healthy sleep habits, exercise, and chiropractic care may help reduce physical tension and support overall wellness.
In some situations, vertigo may be connected to neurological conditions that affect the brain or nervous system. Conditions such as migraines, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or other nervous system disorders can interfere with balance and coordination. Neurological vertigo may sometimes occur alongside headaches, vision changes, numbness, or weakness.
Although neurological causes are less common, they should always be taken seriously. Sudden or severe vertigo symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if they happen with difficulty speaking, walking, or changes in vision. Identifying the root cause early is important for proper treatment and long term health.
Yes, chiropractic care may help some people with vertigo, especially when symptoms are related to the neck, posture, spinal alignment, or balance system.
Chiropractors focus on the relationship between the spine and nervous system. When the spine is not functioning properly, it may affect how the body communicates and maintains balance.
By improving spinal movement and reducing tension in the neck, chiropractic adjustments may help support normal balance function.
Many people seek chiropractic care because it offers a natural and non-invasive approach to managing vertigo symptoms.
The upper neck plays an important role in posture, movement, and balance. When the joints in the cervical spine are not moving properly, it may affect how the brain receives information from the body about balance and positioning. This can sometimes contribute to dizziness, headaches, or feelings of instability.
Gentle chiropractic adjustments may help improve alignment and movement in the neck. Better spinal mobility can help reduce tension and improve communication between the brain and body. Many people also notice less stiffness and improved range of motion after treatment. By supporting proper neck function, chiropractic care may help reduce balance related discomfort over time.
Tight muscles in the neck and shoulders can place extra stress on the spine and surrounding nerves. Muscle tension may also restrict blood flow and create discomfort that affects balance and coordination. Many people with vertigo also experience neck tightness, soreness, or pressure around the shoulders.
Chiropractic care may include soft tissue therapy, stretching, massage techniques, and mobility exercises to help relax tight muscles. Reducing tension in these areas may help improve comfort and movement throughout the upper body. In some cases, relieving muscle tightness may also reduce dizziness symptoms connected to neck strain and poor posture.
Your nervous system helps your brain communicate with the rest of your body, including the systems responsible for balance and coordination. When the spine is not functioning properly, it may interfere with healthy nerve communication. This can sometimes contribute to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or balance problems.
Chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal function to support the nervous system. Gentle adjustments may help reduce pressure and improve movement in the spine, allowing the body to function more efficiently. Supporting healthy nerve communication may help the body respond better to movement and balance changes.
Some chiropractors may use repositioning techniques such as the Epley maneuver to help people with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. This condition happens when tiny calcium crystals inside the inner ear move into the wrong area and disrupt the body’s balance signals.
The Epley maneuver involves a series of guided head and body movements designed to move those crystals back into the correct position. Many patients experience improvement after treatment, especially when vertigo is triggered by certain head movements or position changes. This technique is gentle, non-invasive, and commonly used for BPPV related dizziness.
Poor posture can place extra stress on the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Spending long hours looking down at phones, computers, or desks may strain the cervical spine and contribute to tension related dizziness. Over time, poor posture may also affect balance, mobility, and overall spinal health.
Chiropractic care often includes posture recommendations and exercises to help improve body mechanics. Learning how to sit, stand, and move properly may help reduce strain on the spine and support better alignment. Improved posture may also help decrease neck tension and reduce the likelihood of recurring vertigo symptoms.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the vertigo and the patient’s symptoms.
A chiropractor may use:
Every patient is different, so treatment plans are usually personalized.
You may consider visiting a chiropractor if:
A chiropractor can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care may help your condition.
Along with chiropractic care, certain lifestyle habits may help reduce dizziness episodes.
Chiropractic care is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and experienced chiropractor. Treatment is typically customized based on the patient’s age, health history, and symptoms.
Gentle techniques are often used for patients experiencing dizziness or balance concerns. Before starting treatment, a chiropractor will review your symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition.
Recovery time varies depending on the cause of the vertigo and the severity of symptoms.
Some people notice improvement after a few visits, while others may need ongoing care and exercises for long term relief.
Factors that affect recovery may include:
Vertigo can affect your confidence, balance, and quality of life. The spinning sensation and dizziness may make daily activities stressful and uncomfortable.
